Paper Characteristics

Whiteness

This is determined by how evenly a paper reflects all colors in the visible spectrum. If it reflects more blue than red  it will have a cool blue-white tinge to it making it appear brighter.

Brightness

This refers to a papers ability to reflect light. Most papers have a brightness ranging from 50% to 95%. Papers with a high brightness are more expensive due to the additional additives and processes required during the paper making process.

Opacity

This refers to the transparency of the sheet. The more fibers or fillers a paper has the less show-through you will have. The more opaque a sheet is the less you can see through to the printing on the back side.

Paper Types

Free Sheet

Bond, text and offset papers are referred to as free sheets. The majority of the pulp is produced by a chemical process and no more than 100% may be mechanical pulp. Paper with less than 10% mechanical pulp is considered pulp free and therefore called a free sheet.

Groundwood

Newsprint and other fiberous papers are referred to as groundwood. This paper is made from pulp created when wood chips are ground mechanically rather than refined by a chemical process. This paper is very economical.

Recycled

This paper is made from pulp that is recreated from pre-consumer paper waste or post-consumer waste paper. Pre-consumer paper has not been printed on. This includes paper waste in the paper making process and paper trimmings before it is converted.  Post-consumer has been printed on and used and then gathered for recycle.

Recycling companies sort this paper based on type and then sell it back to the paper mills. This paper costs more to recycle because of the extra steps necessary for ink removal. Recycled papers can be more opaque but are less bright than paper made from virgin pulp.
